Many are familiar with them: roof windows from VELUX.
But do you know what the VELUX brand stands for? VE means ventilation, that is, fresh air. LUX is Latin and means light in German. VELUX is a Danish company founded on the vision of daylight, fresh air and quality of life. It is now the world’s largest manufacturer of roof windows and has production sites in 11 countries. One of them is SIG Sonneborn Bauzubehör Industriegesellschaft mbH, based in Sonneborn near Gotha.

Modern conveyor technology simplifies complicated work processes
The product range of VELUX roof windows is constantly growing. At the same time, production and assembly processes are becoming more and more complicated. Since 2007, the company has been engaged in, among other things, the step-by-step automation of parts of the assembly process and, in order to achieve this goal, sought cooperation with ALFOTEC. The most important background information

ALFOTEC reduces land consumption by about 30%.
The first step was to reduce the enormous land consumption. For this purpose, a more effective solution had to be found for stowing the freshly painted window frames. Together with ALFOTEC a tailor-made solution was found: a 50 meter long chain conveyor including transfer station, which works on the principle “first in – first out”. This had the effect of reducing the space consumption by no less than 30 percent.

Implementation in record time – without interrupting ongoing operations
Thanks to careful planning and preparation, the project was implemented in record time of just under twelve weeks without interrupting ongoing operations.

ALFOTEC Fördertechnik ensures correct allocation in the different assembly lines

The second project phase involved the implementation of a second accumulation conveyor line. In this stage of window production it is decided whether each individual window variant will later reach the correct assembly line.

New production line enables ergonomic and back-friendly working
A completely new type of assembly work surface was implemented, which adjusts fully automatically to the working height of the relevant assembly worker by means of servo motors.

With ALFOTEC conveyor technology nothing gets stuck – for the safety of the employees
In close cooperation with the SIG Sonneborn safety officer, we developed a solution that leaves nothing to be desired in terms of safety: We integrated special sensors for area monitoring when unloading the window frames from the racks. These function like motion detectors: If they are triggered, the conveyor system is stopped immediately. This happens, for example, if an employee’s fingers are at a danger point. This prevents body limbs from being trapped and injured. In addition, in the event of a fire or power failure, fire protection sections that the conveyor system connects are successfully separated from each other. Thus, fire protection is guaranteed at all times, even if the conveyed goods are located between two fire protection areas.

Conclusion:

All in all, the film or project illustrates ALFOTEC’s philosophy: to ensure from the very beginning that the solutions developed are both efficient and safe and promote customer success.
