From 0 to 25.000 € in a few months – the dream start of the “Krämerladen
Jochen Schmees had a vision: Inspired by the “Aunt Olga” shops in Cologne, where he used to live with his family, he wanted to found the 1st “Unverpackt-Laden” outside of a big city. But: He lacked the necessary starting capital. After a short thought, he came up with the idea of collecting it via the online crowdfunding platform www.startnext.com . No sooner said than done: he put his business idea there and made it public via other social media channels.

He defined two crowdfunding targets:

First target:
12.500,– Euro should be collected by March 31st 2019. This sum should be sufficient to renovate the shop, buy 40 glass dispensers and offer a basic assortment. The supporters could commit a freely definable amount or choose certain “packages”.

Second target:
Another 12,500 euros should be added by the end of spring. With this money Schmees wanted to buy more glass dispensers, expand the range of products and buy a nutmeg machine, a grain mill and a grain crusher for the production of cereal flakes.

Opening at the beginning of June

Already at the beginning of May 2019, the time had come: Schmees was able to win 331 supporters for his project and collect the necessary starting capital from them. So nothing more stood in the way of the opening of the grocery store in the city centre of Wermelskirchen. ALFOTEC was not entirely uninvolved in this: With a donation of 1.000,- Euro the company contributed a part of the necessary starting capital. Managing Director Lukas Hackländer explains the company’s commitment as follows: “When we heard about the business idea, we were immediately enthusiastic and wanted to support Jochen Schmees financially.

First of all, this is a credible way to underline our commitment as an environmentally conscious, sustainable company. And secondly, we want to support the local retail trade in our home town, which – as in many other inner cities – is threatened by the increasing online mail order business.

The assortment of the grocery store

Today Schmees offers fresh food, dry food (pasta, cereals etc.), hygiene articles and articles for household needs in its grocery store. He attaches great importance to the regional origin of the products he offers.

For example, he has concluded cooperation agreements with the local companies “Dellmann’s Bräu” and “Kaffee-Teufel”.

Step 1:
The customer brings along a container, such as a jar, in which he or she can pack and transport the purchased goods. This container is weighed when empty.

Step 2:
The customer selects the desired goods from a large selection of food, hygiene and household items.

Step 3:
Jochen Schmees fills the selected goods into the container brought by the customer.

Step 4:
Finally, the container and its contents are weighed, the weight of the container is deducted so that the correct price is calculated and the customer can pay for the goods.
